Deleting Database Files from the SiteSearch System

You may want to delete many of the files related to a particular database or to remove the entire database from the SiteSearch system. The SiteSearch Database Operations Tool (SSDOT) can access the database utility programs to delete all of the files associated with the particular database (i.e., BER volumes, log files, the physical database files, etc.).

Note:

If you only want to remove the database log files, refer to the Deleting Database Log Files document. The database history file, however, can be erased by SSDOT if you remove, or unregister, the database from the program environment.

The only files left after this deletion are the database description (.dsc) file, the routines.h file, the history file, the source data files, and the database backup files. If you wish to also remove these files, you will need to manually delete them from the system command prompt in the <SystemRoot>/dbbuilder/ssdot/dbs/dbname directory for each database. Deleting the database files from the SiteSearch system does not remove the database from SSDOT. The database will still be registered with the program.

Requirements

The database must be a registered database in the SSDOT environment and must be completely built. If you are attempting to remove the database entirely from the SiteSearch system, you may delete the database files as described below and then remove the database from the SSDOT program.

Procedure

Start the SSDOT program and follow the instructions below to delete the majority of the database files that were created during the database build process.

1. From the Main Menu screen, select "3," Database Creation and Maintenance, at the command prompt and press Enter.

2. From the Database Creation and Maintenance menu, type "5," Delete database files, and press Enter. SSDOT will prompt you to select the registered database whose database files you would like to delete. Type the name of the database and press Enter.

3. SSDOT will confirm that you want to perform this task. If you want to delete the database files, type "y" and press Enter. If you want to abort this process, type "n" and press Enter to return to the Database Creation and Maintenance menu.

4. To ensure that the files were deleted, view the jobs listing by typing "j" at the command prompt and pressing Enter. Also check your database dbs directory to make sure that the files have been removed. The converted BER volumes, physical database (.db) files, log files (except for the .history file), and all NIP and SNIP files should have been deleted. All of the directories created during the database build process will remain, but their contents should have been altered.

Rebuilding Your Database

After you have deleted your database files, you can rebuild your database using the source data by initializing the database, updating the database, and validating your database again. This process will create new files to replace the ones you just deleted.

Note:

You do not have to register your database again because it is still registered within the SSDOT program; only the database files were deleted.
