Initializing a Database
During initialization, the SiteSearch Database Operations Tool (SSDOT) accesses the database utility programs to create the five physical database files (HDIR, HEDR, INDX, PDIR, and POST) which make up the database. When done correctly, initialization only needs to be performed once after the database has been registered in SSDOT. Initialization must be performed before any other database build operations. Since initialization can be such a time-consuming process, it will take place in the background.
Important Note: Once you have run the initialization process, do not execute the process again unless your intention is to deliberately erase all records in the database and begin anew.
Requirements
To initialize a database within SSDOT, you should have completed the following tasks:
Procedure
Start the SSDOT program and complete the following steps to initialize your database in SSDOT.
1. Type "3" at the command prompt in the main menu and press Enter to view the Database Creation and Maintenance menu.
|
2. Type "1" on the Database Creation and Maintenance screen and press Enter to initialize your database. After you are prompted to, enter the name of the registered database you want to initialize and press Enter.
Note: |
If the database you have selected has already been initialized, SSDOT will give you a warning message and the opportunity to exit back to the Database Creation and Maintenance menu.
|
If disk space checking is enabled for the database, SSDOT will display the amount of disk space the database will need to reserve followed by the amount of free disk space available. SSDOT will then ask you for confirmation before proceeding with the initialization process. Press the space bar as prompted to return to the Database Creation and Maintenance screen.
|
3. When SSDOT has finished initializing the database (as a background process), the following message will appear at the bottom of the current menu screen once the initialization has been completed:
[There are completed jobs]
|
Type "j" and press Enter at the command prompt to view the jobs list. If your database initialization was completed successfully you should receive a message similar to the following:
---------- Active Jobs ----------
Initialize dbname [97/10/29 15:46:54] (*FINISHED*, Exit Message = Okay)
