Validating a Database

When validating a database, the SiteSearch Database Operations Tool (SSDOT) calls several database utility programs to perform tests upon the database after you have registered, initialized, and updated the database to ensure it was built correctly. The results of the validation process are written to a log file, which you can view for errors in the database regarding the database physical file size and database index terms. It is recommended that you validate your database every time it is updated as you maintain the database by adding, replacing, and deleting records. Because this process is time-consuming, it is performed in the background.

Requirements

To validate a database within SSDOT, you should have completed the following tasks:

Database registration and initialization are only performed once during the database build process. A database is updated any time the database records need to be changed. Validation occurs when SSDOT performs automatic verification after the database has been updated or when the system administrator manually validates the database using the steps described below.

Note:

Automatic verification is "ENABLED" or "disabled" for a database according to the database registration information. If SSDOT is setup to automatically validate, or verify, your database, skip steps 1 and 2 below.

Procedure

Start the SSDOT program and complete the following steps to validate your database in SSDOT.

1. Type "3" at the command prompt (">") in the Main Menu and press Enter to view the Database Creation and Maintenance menu.

2. Select the "Validate database" option from the Database Creation and Maintenance menu by typing "3" at the command prompt and pressing Enter.

3. Type the name of the registered database you want to validate and press Enter. Press the space bar to return to the Database Creation and Maintenance menu.

3. When the job has been completed by SSDOT, the following message will be displayed on the current menu screen:

[There are completed jobs]

Check the jobs list by typing "j" at the command prompt and pressing Enter to view the result of the database validation process. You should receive a message similar to the following in the jobs list:

---------- Active Jobs ----------

Validating cata [97/10/29 16:14:23] (*FINISHED*, Exit Message = Okay)

---------------------------------

Note:

Any errors reported at run time indicate errors in the validation program, not errors in the database. Errors in the database itself are reported in the log files (see step 4).

4. Check the database log files to view the results of the validation.

From the Main Menu screen, type "3" to select the Database Creation and Maintenance screen and press Enter. Next, select "7", Log Files (menu), from the Database Creation and Maintenance menu and press Enter. Select option "1" and press Enter to view the log files and see your results. Any errors present in the log files represent an error in your database that will need to be corrected before the SiteSearch system can successfully use the database for searching.
