Deleting Database Log Files
When you want to remove a database from the SiteSearch Database Operations Tool (SSDOT) or just delete the history information about a database, you may also wish to delete the database log files. These log files store information about the processes that the database utility programs execute on a database when you are building or updating the database.
By following the procedures below, you can remove all of the log files related to a particular database. You cannot, however, remove only one log file at a time using SSDOT. If you want to remove an individual log file, locate the correct file in the <SystemRoot>/dbbuilder/ssdot/logs directory defined in the database registration information and manually remove it from the system.
Note: |
When you complete the procedures below, you will remove all of the process information about a database that may be helpful in troubleshooting future problems. You can update the database to create new log files to replace some of the files that you deleted.
|
Requirements
You can only remove log files in SSDOT if the database has been built using the SSDOT program.
Procedure
Start the SSDOT program and complete the following steps to delete the system log files.
1. Select "3," Database Creation and Maintenance, from the SSDOT Main Menu and press Enter.
|
2. Select "6," Log Files (menu), from the Database Creation and Maintenance screen and press Enter.
|
3. Type "3" at the Log Files screen and press Enter to delete the log files. When prompted by SSDOT, type the name of the related database and press Enter. SSDOT will then confirm that you really want to delete the log files related to this database. To delete the files, type "y" and press Enter. To return to the Database Creation and Maintenance menu without deleting the log files, type "n" and press Enter.
Important Note: By completing this task, you will remove ALL of the database log files contained in the logs directory that you defined in the database registration information.
After confirming whether or not you wish to delete the files, press the space bar to continue.
|
4. Check the jobs listing to ensure that the log files were deleted by typing "j" from any menu command prompt and pressing Enter. You should receive the following message in the jobs listing if the deletion was successful:
---------- Active Jobs ----------
Deleting log files associated with dbname [97/11/11 17:04:04] (*FINISHED*, Exit )
---------------------------------
|
You can also review the contents of your database logs directory to ensure that all of the files were deleted. If you are unsure where the log files are stored in the system, the path name is defined in the database registration information. You can review this information by typing "v," View database info, from any menu prompt within SSDOT and press Enter. SSDOT will then prompt you for the name of the database you wish to view. A screen similar to the following will then appear, showing the registration information about your particular database:
To find the location of the log files, refer to the Logfile Directory category when viewing your database information.
