Importing a Database from Another SSDOT Environment

The SiteSearch Database Operations Tool (SSDOT) allows you to import a database from another environment, keeping all of its registration information. You can perform this task instead of registering a database in SSDOT. This process is often helpful to administrators who create a test environment and want to move a database into a production environment.

Requirements

SSDOT can import registration information from another SSDOT environment provided

  • the other environment is on the same machine as the current environment.
  • the user knows the location of the other environment's ssdot.ini file and has read access to the file.
  • the directory in which the other SSDOT environment stores its registration information is accessible by the user.
  • the imported database does not have a name that would conflict with the name of a database that is already registered in the current environment.

Procedure

Start the SSDOT program and complete the following steps to import a database from another SSDOT environment into your current SSDOT environment.

1. From the Main Menu screen, select Database Registration by typing "1" at the command prompt and pressing Enter.

2. Type "2," Import a database from another environment, at the Database Registration screen prompt and press Enter.

3. When prompted, type the path name of the ssdot.ini configuration file of the other SSDOT environment and press Enter. The ssdot.ini for the other environment contains the information about every registered database in that environment. SSDOT will then display a list of the available databases from the other environment based on this configuration file. Refer to the following example:

The following databases are available ([*] = locked):

sample test

An asterisk ('*') will appear next to any locked databases that currently have active jobs running in the background. You will not be able to import a locked database until the background processes have been completed.

4. Next, type the name the database you would like to import for the other environment and press Enter. SSDOT will import the database. When prompted, press the space bar to return to the Database Registration menu.

5. Check to make sure that the database has been registered in the environment by typing "l" and pressing Enter at the menu command prompt. SSDOT will list all of the registered databases. If the database you just imported is not on this list, it was not added to this environment correctly. You should start the procedures over again.

6. Review the database registration information for this new database to make sure that all of the information is accurate. Edit the database registration information to reflect any changes necessary because of the change in environment.

After importing the database, it is registered in your current SSDOT environment. To be able to access the database through the SiteSearch environment, you will need to complete the rest of the database build process by initializing the database, updating the database, and validating the database in SSDOT.
