Support Staff Expands

SiteSearch version 4.0.2 to be released  
Open SiteSearch 4.0.2 will soon be available. This version, a maintenance release, adds some functionality, fixes some search-related problems, corrects some display-type errors and now supports Sun's JavaMail 1.1 API, a supported and documented E-mail set of Java packages.

We recommend that, at the minimum, users upgrade to the 4.0.2 jar file to receive all of the bug fixes.

We will send version 4.0.2 via ftp to users that have established an ftp account for OCLC Product Support. If we do not have an ftp account set up with you, please contact us by phone (800/848.5878 x6414) or by email, , to make delivery arrangements.

At the ALA Midwinter Conference in Philadelphia, managers from the Open SiteSearch team gave brief presentations at the Open SiteSearch Update for Current Users. Over thirty people attended.

Terry Noreault, Vice President of the OCLC Office of Research, talked about the Cooperative Online Resource Cataloging (CORC) project - an effort to help libraries share web-based information seamlessly using metadata. With the assistance of participating OCLC-member libraries, CORC will produce a catalog of web resources that supports both USMARC and enhanced Dublin Core cataloging formats. The catalog will eventually be made available to library patrons. CORC is built upon the foundation of several OCLC products including Open SiteSearch.

Victoria Mueller, Manager of Custom Services and User Support, highlighted efforts made to improve user services for Open SiteSearch users.

  Documentation Expanding topics areas covered in Open SiteSearch documentation including interface creation, access control, inter-library loan, and the use of statistics.
  Training Planning to offer training classes and workshops over the Internet in the future.
  Support Support area added to the Open SiteSearch Documentation and Training website, renamed HelpZone
Victoria also explained the purpose and scope of Custom Services, which is designed to assist libraries with limited staff resources or immediate implementation requirements.

Al Zavar, Manager of Development, spoke about Open SiteSearch 4.1, scheduled for release later this year. Open SiteSearch 4.1 will provide integrated access to new OCLC products and features, including:

  Viewing cross-database result sets as one result set
  Duplicate record detection across databases
  Vocabulary-assisted searching
  Online database updating
  Ability to create local metadata records.

Pat Stevens, Marketing Manager, concluded the meeting with a brief marketing update. She encouraged users to attend the 3rd User Meeting in Dublin. She also reaffirmed OCLC's commitment to market research and explained how OCLC will continue to listen to and incorporate user needs into product development.

Product Support Staff Expands  
Over the past few months, the Product Support unit of Open SiteSearch has added key staff to expand and improve serve to Open SiteSearch users.

Kara Byerly, second-line Product Support Specialist, has a degree in technical communication from Bowling Green State University. She wrote extensive documentation for Open SiteSearch as a contract worker before joining OCLC as a full-time employee in Product Support.

Lisa Cox, developer, has been with OCLC for 11 years. Lisa develops increased functionality for new versions of Open SiteSearch and Custom Services as well as spearheads bug fixes and patches for Open SiteSearch.

Doug Loynes, first-line Product Support Specialist. Doug has a research library background and comes to OCLC most recently from the Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne IN. Doug is the first contact for reporting problems with Open SiteSearch and edits the InSite newsletter.
