Operating the
WebZ System on Windows NT

This document
contains instructions for performing the following OCLC
SiteSearch WebZ system operations:
Document
Conventions
- <WebZ_root>
is the location of the environment where you installed WebZ.
- Commands you
type appear in quotes, like this: "poll".
Requirements
Install
the Open SiteSearch suite, configure the
WebZ Extension and read the Overview of
the Open SiteSearch Suite before you start working with the WebZ system.
Starting
the WebZ System
The following
steps describe how to start the WebZ system.
Note: |
Start all
SiteSearch processes (Web server, SQL server, and WebZ) under the
same user name you used to install the SiteSearch software. |
1. Verify
that your Web server is running. Refer to your Web server system
administration documentation for instructions about starting the
Web server.

2. Do you
wish to use the Access component
to provide patron authentication and profiling?
- Yes.
Start the SQL server. Then go to step 3.
- No.
Go directly to step 3.
|
3. Which
version of SiteSearch are you running?
|
4. Use the
ssadmin poll command
to verify that the OpServe, JaSSI, ZBase, and Access servers for
WebZ have started.
Note: |
If
you did not start the SQL server software or configure the
Access component, the Access server immediately shuts down
after it starts.

Using
the ssadmin Interface
The ssadmin interface
is an interface to the Operations server, OpServe, in the WebZ system.
This interface allows you to monitor system status and issue commands
directly to the system components. The following steps describe how to
run the ssadmin interface.
For detailed information
about ssadmin commands, refer to ssadmin Command
Reference document for additional information.
1. In Windows
NT Explorer, locate the <WebZ_root>\scripts directory.

2. Double
click the ssadmin.bat file to start the ssadmin utility in an MS-DOS
window.

3. While
you are working in ssadmin, the command prompt changes to SSAdmin
Cmd>. Some commonly-used ssadmin commands are:
- poll,
which lists the servers that are currently running
- help,
which lists and briefly describes all ssadmin commands
- quit,
which closes the ssadmin interface without shutting down any servers
- term,
which shuts down all currently-running servers

4. To exit
the ssadmin interface, type "quit" and press Enter.

Shutting
Down the WebZ System
The following
steps describe how to shut down the WebZ system.
Note: |
This command
shuts down any active user sessions. It immediately disconnects
any active sessions from the WebZ system.

1. Which
version of SiteSearch are you running?
- SiteSearch
4.1.1 or higher. Go to step 2.
- SiteSearch
4.1.0 or earlier. Go to step 3.
|
2. To shut
down SiteSearch 4.1.1 or higher:

3. To shut
down SiteSearch 4.1.0 or earlier:
- In the
Control Panel, double click Services.
- Scroll
through the list of services provided and highlight the WebZ Operations
Manager. Its status should be Started.
Note: |
If the status does not register as Started, WebZ is already
shut down.

Click
the Stop button. After several seconds, the status of the WebZ
Operations Manager changes to blank.
- Go to
step 4.
|
4. Stop
the Web server and the SQL server, if applicable, separately. Refer
to the Web server and SQL server documentation for instructions
about stopping these servers.

Starting/Stopping
Individual WebZ System Components
Use the ssadmin
interface to selectively start and
stop individual system components
(i.e., JaSSI, ZBase, etc.). For information about the ssadmin interface,
refer to ssadmin Command Reference.
