Operating the WebZ System on Windows NT

Contents

This document contains instructions for performing the following OCLC SiteSearch WebZ system operations:

Document Conventions

  • <WebZ_root> is the location of the environment where you installed WebZ.
  • Commands you type appear in quotes, like this: "poll".

Requirements

Install the Open SiteSearch suite, configure the WebZ Extension and read the Overview of the Open SiteSearch Suite before you start working with the WebZ system.

Starting the WebZ System

The following steps describe how to start the WebZ system.

Note:   Start all SiteSearch processes (Web server, SQL server, and WebZ) under the same user name you used to install the SiteSearch software.

1. Verify that your Web server is running. Refer to your Web server system administration documentation for instructions about starting the Web server.

2. Do you wish to use the Access component to provide patron authentication and profiling?

  • Yes. Start the SQL server. Then go to step 3.
  • No. Go directly to step 3.
Note:

Make sure that you have configured the Access component for WebZ before proceeding with this step.

3. Which version of SiteSearch are you running?

  • SiteSearch 4.1.2. From the Programs menu, select SiteSearch_4_1_2. Then click Start SiteSearch WebZ. This launches the ssmgr.bat file.
  • SiteSearch 4.1.1. From Windows NT Explorer, execute the ssadmin.bat file:
    • Move to the <WebZ_root>\scripts directory.
    • Double-click ssadmin.bat to execute this file.

    Note:

Executing ssadmin.bat starts the ssadmin utility, which starts the OpServe if it is not already running. OpServe then starts the WebZ servers listed in the OpServe.ini configuration file (typically JaSSI, ZBase, and Access).

ssadmin.bat runs in an MS-DOS window. After displaying a series of messages, the ssadmin interface opens and you see the SSAdmin Cmd> prompt.

  • SiteSearch 4.1.0 or earlier. Follow these steps:

    • In the Control Panel, double click Services.
    • Scroll through the list of services provided and highlight the WebZ Operations Manager.
    • Click the Start button. After several seconds, the status of the WebZ Operations Manager changes to "Started."
    • Start ssadmin. See Using the ssadmin Interface below.

4. Use the ssadmin poll command to verify that the OpServe, JaSSI, ZBase, and Access servers for WebZ have started.

Note:

If you did not start the SQL server software or configure the Access component, the Access server immediately shuts down after it starts.

Using the ssadmin Interface

The ssadmin interface is an interface to the Operations server, OpServe, in the WebZ system. This interface allows you to monitor system status and issue commands directly to the system components. The following steps describe how to run the ssadmin interface.

For detailed information about ssadmin commands, refer to ssadmin Command Reference document for additional information.

1. In Windows NT Explorer, locate the <WebZ_root>\scripts directory.

2. Double click the ssadmin.bat file to start the ssadmin utility in an MS-DOS window.

3. While you are working in ssadmin, the command prompt changes to SSAdmin Cmd>. Some commonly-used ssadmin commands are:

  • poll, which lists the servers that are currently running
  • help, which lists and briefly describes all ssadmin commands
  • quit, which closes the ssadmin interface without shutting down any servers
  • term, which shuts down all currently-running servers

4. To exit the ssadmin interface, type "quit" and press Enter.

Note:

For instructions about stopping the WebZ system, refer to the Shutting Down the WebZ System section below.

Shutting Down the WebZ System

The following steps describe how to shut down the WebZ system.

Note:

This command shuts down any active user sessions. It immediately disconnects any active sessions from the WebZ system.

1. Which version of SiteSearch are you running?

  • SiteSearch 4.1.1 or higher. Go to step 2.
  • SiteSearch 4.1.0 or earlier. Go to step 3.

2. To shut down SiteSearch 4.1.1 or higher:

  • In Windows NT Explorer, execute the ssadmin_rb.bat file

    • Move to the <WebZ_root>\scripts directory.
    • Double-click ssadmin_rb.bat to execute this file. ssadmin_rb.bat runs in an MS-DOS window. After displaying a series of messages, the ssadmin interface opens and you see the SSAdmin Cmd> prompt.

Note:  Because OpServe is already running, no servers start up when you execute ssadmin.bat this time.

  • Type "term" at the SSAdmin Cmd> prompt and press Enter. The OpServe terminates each of the WebZ servers and returns you to the system command prompt.
  • Go to step 4.

3. To shut down SiteSearch 4.1.0 or earlier:

  • In the Control Panel, double click Services.
  • Scroll through the list of services provided and highlight the WebZ Operations Manager. Its status should be Started.

    Note:

If the status does not register as Started, WebZ is already shut down.

  • Click the Stop button. After several seconds, the status of the WebZ Operations Manager changes to blank.
  • Go to step 4.

4. Stop the Web server and the SQL server, if applicable, separately. Refer to the Web server and SQL server documentation for instructions about stopping these servers.
