Backing Up Record Builder Databases

Document Conventions

  • <WebZ_root> is the location of the SiteSearch environment that contains the Record Builder application.
  • database_dir is a database's top-level directory.

Backup Strategy

You can use the Site Search Database Operations Tool (SSDOT) included with OCLC Database Builder to back up databases you populate and maintain with the Record Builder application (also called Record Builder databases).

The Database Builder document, Backing Up a Database, provides procedures for creating, listing, restoring, and deleting database backups using SSDOT.

You may wish to use a different backup schedule for Record Builder databases than for local databases that you update by performing batch updates. Databases that you update in batch mode may not change between batch updates, while databases that you update with Record Builder can change frequently since staff can update them online at any time. Therefore, you may wish to consider weekly or even daily backups of Record Builder databases if they are modified frequently.

It is possible to restore a corrupted Record Builder database from a backup copy of the database and the journal files created for each transaction (adding, modifying, or deleting a record) submitted to the database. However, if there have been many changes to the database since the last backup, it could takes a considerable amount of time to process each journal file against the backup and thus restore the database to its most recent state.

Procedure

Follow these steps to perform database backups on a regular basis.

1. Create a backup file for the database using SSDOT.

2. Delete the journal files that have accumulated since the last backup. Journal files usually reside in <WebZ_root>/dbbuilder/dbs/database_dir/journal/.

Once you back up a database, you have captured all the transactions contained in the latest journal files and you can safely delete them.
