SSDOT Backup Options for a Pears Database

Keeping at least one recent copy of a database is the best practice for any database administrator. SSDOT for Pears provides backup options for listing, creating, and deleting backup copies of a Pears database. Additionally, it offers the option to restore a database from a backup. What follows are the procedures for performing each of these administrative functions on a Pears database using SSDOT for Pears.

List Backups

To determine if a current backup exists for a Pears database, you can list the date and time stamps of all backups. The following procedure instructs you on how to complete this simple activity in SSDOT for Pears:

1. Start SSDOT for Pears.

Result:

The following Main Menu appears:

Main Menu

1. Database Registration
2. BER Records
3. Database Creation and Maintenance
4. Database Backup
5. Advanced Options
6. Exit SSDOT

Working Database: No database selected

Type "l" To LIST available databases
Type "s" To SET a working database
Type "u" To UNSET the working database

Press [ENTER] key to return to Main Menu

2. Type 4 and press Enter to go to the Database Backup Menu.

Result:

The following menu appears:

Database Backup Menu

1. List available backups
2. Delete backup
3. Create backup
4. Restore from backup
5. Exit SSDOT

Delete Backups

It is not necessary for you to keep multiple backup copies of each database, especially out-of-date copies. In fact the best practice is to delete older versions of backups immediately after you have created a new backup in order to conserve your file space and avoid confusion about which backup copy to use when recovering a database. To delete old backup copies of Pears database files using SSDOT for Pears, complete the following steps:

1. Start SSDOT for Pears.

Result:

The following Main Menu appears:

1. Database Registration
2. BER Records
3. Database Creation and Maintenance
4. Database Backup
5. Advanced Options
6. Exit SSDOT

Working Database: No database selected

Type "l" To LIST available databases
Type "s" To SET a working database

Note: Complete Steps 3 - 6 to delete additional backup copies.

Create a Backup

In order to recover a Pears database using SSDOT for Pears, you first need a current backup copy of the database. The procedure below instructs you on how to create a backup of a Pears database.

1. Start SSDOT for Pears.

Result:

The following Main Menu appears:

Restore from Backup

The chief reason for maintaining a backup copy of a Pears database is to use it in recovering the database should it become corrupted. A backup copy, along with any transaction journal files, can be used successfully to reinstate a database to its condition just prior to it becoming corrupted. The procedure below guides you through the typical recovery of a corrupted Pears database.

1. Start SSDOT for Pears.

Result:

The following Main Menu appears:
