Working with BER Records in SSDOT
During a database
update in the SiteSearch Database Operations
Tool (SSDOT) interface, any source data files that are converted into
ASN.1/BER format are saved by the Open SiteSearch Database Builder software
into the directory defined in item 4 of the database
registration information as ASN.1/BER volumes. The following tasks
are common ways you can manage ASN.1/BER source volumes within SSDOT:
Requirements
To perform the tasks listed above, the database must be registered in SSDOT and updated at least once.
Procedure
To work with the ASN.1/BER formatted records, start the SSDOT program and refer to the steps below to access the SSDOT BER Records menu.
1. From the SSDOT Main Menu command prompt, select "2," BER Records (menu), and press Enter. The following BER Records menu will be displayed on your screen:
2. To select an option, type the number corresponding to the task you wish to perform at the menu command prompt and press Enter. For additional information about each of the individual tasks, refer to the BER Records Menu Options table below for a description of each menu item and its performance results.

Description
The following table provides descriptions or references to ways that you can use SSDOT to manage your ASN.1/BER database records.

Task Description
1. List BER volumes
This option allows you to list the available ASN.1/BER volumes for any given database. Higher volume numbers correspond to the more recent ASN.1/BER volumes.
2. Delete BER volume
SSDOT first prompts for a database name and ASN.1/BER volume number. It then asks you to confirm the decision to delete this ASN.1/BER volume file. If you confirm, the ASN.1/BER volume for the given database is deleted.
3. Display BER records from BER file
SSDOT first prompts for a database name and ASN.1/BER volume number. It then prompts for a range of records from the specified ASN.1/BER volume. When prompted to include a fcl filename, type "none and press Enter because Open SiteSearch Database Builder 4.0 does not support the Formatting Control Language. SSDOT displays the desired records from the indicated ASN.1/BER file. The records are displayed in a raw format.
4. Convert input data to BER-formatted records
SSDOT will access the database utility programs to convert source data into ASN.1/BER format. It is recommended that you perform this conversion directly from the system command prompt as described in step 3 in the Creating a New SiteSearch Database document instead of using the SSDOT interface.
5. Extract BER Records from Database
Upon selection of this option, SSDOT prompts for a database name and ASN.1/BER volume. Next, you will be prompted for a filename to write the ASN.1/BER records to and asked for a range of records. Finally, SSDOT will extract the specified records from the database and store them in the file that you have specified.
6. View BER conversion log
This option displays the log file for the most recent ASN.1/BER conversion. Refer to Viewing Log Files for additional information about the conversion logs.
7. Exit SSDOT
By selecting this option, you can exit the SSDOT program directly from the BER Records menu.
