Improving interoperability for cross-catalog searching is within reach!

This session describes the work of a NISO Standards committee to develop a U.S. National Z39.50 Profile for library Applications and discusses its relationship with the Bath Profile. These specifications provide a basis for formal interoperability testing, and the session will describe the Z39.50 Interoperability Testbed at the University of North Texas. A National Leadership Grant from the U.S. Federal Institute of Museum and Library Applications is providing resources to develop testing methodologies and establish an operational interoperability testbed.

From RC to DB: Distributed Cataloging in CORC and Local Database Creation

Charles Dean
Library Technology Group
University of Wisconsin-Madison

Download PowerPoint presentation: Wisconsin_Dean.ppt

SiteSearch databases developed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have so far included multimedia collections, image archives, and bibliographic resources.

Through a Department of Education grant project, UW-Madison staff are using the OCLC Cooperative Online Resource Catalog (CORC) to build a local SiteSearch database of Web sites relevant to Asian Studies. This session describes the development of this database. Project records are batch exported from the CORC Resource Catalog and loaded into Database Builder. WebZ provides a researchers' "portal" to the collection, the Digital Asia Library.

Though not a technical grant, the project's challenges include DC-MARC crosswalks, thematic WebZ searches, and support for Unicode.

Integration and Customization of SiteSearch in a Multitype Consortium

Peter Binkley
Interface Developer
Alberta Library Interface

Download HTML presentation: TAL_Binkley_print.html

The Alberta Library is a province-wide consortium comprising public, academic, and a few special libraries.

Their SiteSearch implementation has to reflect the different needs of the various members and activities of the consortium. These include consortial licensing agreements, which make it possible for our SiteSearch implementation to present a wide range of resources to our users.

This talk focuses on the ways in which we are using the flexibility of the WebZ interface to integrate these resources, for example, by automating searching for book reviews. This kind of tight integration will help our member libraries get the maximum benefit from our licensed resources.
