  • Install, configure, and operate the WebZ software
  • Configure access to remote databases and servers
  • Customize the WebZ interface for your patrons
  • Format records for display in the WebZ interface
  • Describe system processes for dynamic page creation in the WebZ interface
  • Create a user profile database

Agenda (Two days)

Day 1

  1. Reviewing foundational concepts and standards
  2. Understanding system architecture
  3. Installing the software
  4. Administering and operating the WebZ system
  5. Configuring databases and servers

Day 2

  1. Implementing Java in SiteSearch
  2. Formatting database records
  3. Customizing the WebZ interface
  4. Creating user profiles for use with the Access server
  5. Troubleshooting WebZ

Audience

Systems managers, systems librarians, systems administrators, programmers, and project leaders. The instruction uses exercises and practical examples throughout; therefore, attendees should be prepared to participate and interact with the software.

  • MARC (Machine Readable Cataloging Record)
  • SGML (Standard Generalized Mark-up Language)

Database Builder

This exercise-based course outlines the process of creating a local database from vendor-supplied or local source data and configuring access to it through the WebZ interface in order to provide your users with one common interface to diverse resources. Upon completion of this module, you are able to:

  • Describe the procedures involved in creating a SiteSearch database
  • Define the indexes and indexing rules for the creation of a database
  • Estimate database size requirements
  • Configure and test access to the database through the WebZ interface

Agenda (One day)

  1. Describing the database build process
  2. Defining the database description file
  3. Creating a SiteSearch database

Prerequisites

Record Builder Application

This one-day course reviews the process of building local databases and then provides demonstrations and exercises for making online updates to those databases using the Record Builder application's cataloguer interface. Additionally, this course leads you through the procedures for making databases available in both the cataloguer interface and the WebZ interface. Upon completion of this course, you are able to:

  • Describe the four potential roles associated with building and maintaining a local database
  • Identify the architecture that supports the Record Builder application
  • Define and configure databases for access through the cataloguer interface and the WebZ interface
  • Update local databases online using the cataloguer interface
  • Recover a corrupted local database using database journals

Agenda (One day)

  1. Reviewing the WebZ architecture
  2. Comparing and contrasting the Record Builder application with WebZ and Database Builder
  3. Defining the four roles associated with a local database
  4. Installing, starting, and stopping the Database Builder software
  5. Describing the Database Builder directory structure
  6. Defining a database for online update
  7. Creating a new record using the cataloguer interface
  8. Updating an existing record using the cataloguer interface
  9. Deleting a record using the cataloguer interface
  10. Making your online databases available to searchers
  11. Working with templates and subtemplates
