Description of a SiteSearch Database

The term SiteSearch database refers to any database created using the Open SiteSearch Database Builder software. A SiteSearch database can be large, such as WorldCat (the OCLC Online Union Catalog) containing approximately 38 million records, or small and can contain a variety of information, such as citations, full-text articles, images, or other binary data. A SiteSearch database is comprised of five files, called physical database files, that together form a searchable database. These physical database files are created during the database build process. SiteSearch databases are specifically designed for use with OCLC's Newton search engine, which allows multiple users to browse, search, and display records from a SiteSearch database.
