Bailey new director
Brenda Bailey -- a librarian with an extensive background in library automation, sales and management -- was appointed director of Distributed Systems in April. Distributed Systems oversees all Open SiteSearch operations. She replaces Taylor Surface.

Brenda started with OCLC in 1995 in the US Sales division, most recently serving as its Western Region Marketing Manager. Prior to joining OCLC, she spent five years with the CARL Corporation in local systems and two years with the UnCover Company marketing document delivery services. Brenda began her career working for eight years in public services at academic libraries.

She received her BFA from Bowling Green State University, MLS from Kent State University, MM from the University of South Dakota, and is currently working towards a Ph.D. at the University of Colorado at Denver.

"I've always been excited about the Open SiteSearch Suite. It will be invaluable in helping libraries extend patron services by building better descriptive databases and managing better access to their collections. I look forward to working with the Distributed Systems staff as we develop more features for the Open SiteSearch Suite and provide more services to our users."

Brenda can be reached at or 800/848.5878 x5056. She will be attending ALA annual in June.

4.0.2 released
Throughout March, OCLC distributed the latest version of Open SiteSearch, version 4.0.2, to most of its users. Version 4.0.2 is available in java and perl scripts. Users have the option of implementing the full upgrade version or the bug fixes. OCLC strongly urges users to implement the upgrade to take advantage of the full functionality of 4.0.2. Users currently running version 4.0.0 or version 4.0.1 must upgrade to version 4.0.2 in order to upgrade to version 4.1.

Users who have not yet received version 4.0.2 should contact the support desk to arrange for software delivery. Email: . Telephone: 800/848.5878 x6414.

3.1 support ends
OCLC has discontinued support for OCLC SiteSearch 3.1 in April. Version 3.1 was based on a programming language proprietary to OCLC. In 1998, OCLC introduced a java-based version of Open SiteSearch, version 4.0.0. All development since then has implemented java technology. OCLC encourages users to plan for the migration to java if they have not already done so.
