Operating the WebZ System on UNIX

Contents

This document contains instructions for performing the following Open SiteSearch WebZ system operations on UNIX platforms (AiX, DIGITAL UNIX, IRIX, Solaris, HP-UX (versions 4.1.1 and earlier), or Linux (beginning with version 4.1.2).

Note:

If you are using the Netscape Web server, refer to the Netscape documentation for instructions regarding server administration.

Document Conventions

  • <WebZ_root> is the location of your installed WebZ environment.
  • SQL server is the database server used in the Access component:
    • MySQL (beginning with SiteSearch 4.1.2)
    • mSQL (SiteSearch 4.1.1 and earlier versions)
  • sql_dir is the your SQL server's top-level directory:
    • <WebZ_root>/mysql for MySQL (beginning with SiteSearch 4.1.2)
    • <WebZ_root>/msql for mSQL (SiteSearch 4.1.1 and earlier versions)

Starting the WebZ System

The following steps describe how to start the WebZ system.

Note:   Start all SiteSearch processes (Web server, SQL server, and WebZ) under the same user name you used to install the SiteSearch software.

1. Verify that your Web server is running.

If you are using the Apache server that was included with the WebZ installation, refer to Starting and Stopping the Apache Server.

2. Do you wish to use the Access component to provide patron authentication and profiling?

  • Yes. Start the SQL server:
  • No. Go directly to step 3.
Note:

Make sure that you have configured the Access component before proceeding with this step.

3. In the <WebZ_root>/scripts directory, type "ssadmin" and press Enter. This starts the OpServe server. The OpServe server then starts the JaSSI, ZBase, and Access servers. OpServe also starts the ZBroker server if it has been configured to work with the WebZ system. The system is fully operational at this point.

Important Note: If you did not start the SQL server to provide user authentication, the Access server shuts down immediately after it is started.

Starting and Stopping the MySQL Server (beginning with SiteSearch 4.1.2)

Beginning with SiteSearch 4.1.2, follow the instructions below to start and stop the MySQL AB's MySQL server to allow you to use the Access component included with the WebZ system. If you do not use the Access component for patron authentication, you do not need to start the MySQL server.

Starting the MySQL Server

In the <WebZ_root>/scripts directory, type "mysql start" and press Enter.

Note:

You must issue this command before you start the WebZ system for the Access component to function correctly. If the WebZ system is already running, use the term command to stop the system in ssadmin, start the MySQL server, and then restart the WebZ system.

Stopping the MySQL Server

In the <WebZ_root>/scripts directory, type "mysql stop" and press Enter.

Note:

If you stop the MySQL server without stopping the Access component or the entire WebZ system, patrons are not authenticated before starting a session and can access all of the resources available through the WebZ Out-of-the-Box Interface (OBI).

Using the ssadmin Interface

The ssadmin interface is an interface to the OpServe server in the WebZ system. This interface allows you to monitor system status and issue commands directly to the system components. The following steps describe how to run the ssadmin interface. For detailed information about ssadmin interface commands, refer to the ssadmin Command Reference.

1. In the <WebZ_root>/scripts directory, type "ssadmin" and press Enter. This command starts the ssadmin interface and changes the command prompt to "SSAdmin Cmd>". If the OpServe is not running when you issue this command, ssadmin will immediately try and start the server.

2. To view a list of all ssadmin commands, type "help" and press Enter.

3. To view the usage information for a particular ssadmin command, type "help command" and press Enter.

Note:

For detailed information about ssadmin interface commands, refer to the ssadmin Command Reference.

4. To exit the ssadmin interface without stopping the WebZ system, type "quit" and press Enter.

Note:

For instructions about stopping the WebZ system, refer to Shutting Down the WebZ System.

Shutting Down the WebZ System

The following steps describe how to shut down the WebZ system.

Note:

This command shuts down any active user sessions. Active sessions are immediately disconnected from the WebZ system.

1. Start the ssadmin interface.
