User Implementations

The following organizations have offered to allow other SiteSearch users to view their SiteSearch implementations. Click a link in the list below to learn more about each site, including its location, library type(s), a description of the site, and a URL to the site. Unless otherwise noted, the URL shown is for the organization's SiteSearch production system.

We will add information about other SiteSearch implementations as it becomes available.



Colorado Virtual Library

Description:

The Access Colorado Library and Information Network (ACLIN) develops and maintains the Colorado Virtual Library. ACLIN uses WebZ to provide access to all Z39.59-searchable library databases in the state of Colorado, databases of digitized objects, abstract and index databases, databases of selected Internet resources, and resources for Colorado children, parents, and teachers.

ACLIN uses Database Builder to create records for digitized objects for the Colorado Digitization Project, a collaborative initiative involving Colorado's archives, historical societies, libraries, and museums.

They also use Database Builder to create the Colorado Virtual Library for Kids, a searchable database of over 6200 Web sites suitable for children. Colorado educators and library professionals chose these sites to assist students to meet Colorado Department of Education Content Standards.

Florida Center for Library Automation (FCLA)

Description:

The Florida Center for Library Automation (FCLA) provides automation services that assist the university libraries of the State University System (SUS) of Florida in meeting their teaching and research objectives for students and faculty.

FCLA uses WebZ for the Linking Florida's Natural Heritage (LFNH) project to create a virtual library of Florida ecological information from heterogeneous museum, library, and citation databases throughout the state of Florida, including the catalogs of the SUS libraries.

Inspire - Indiana Spectrum of Information Resources
Location: Indiana Cooperative Library Services Authority (INCOLSA), Indianapolis, Indiana

Description:

Inspire uses WebZ as the Z39.50 interface to commercial databases, made available to all Indiana residents through state funding, and the catalogs of several Indiana universities.

INCOLSA also developed Inspire Kids, a WebZ interface especially for children, as part of the Inspire Project. INCOLSA is committed to giving the interface to anyone who is interested. The HTML, graphics, and sound files for Inspire Kids are available to download from this demonstration. For more information, contact Mary-Elise Haug, Inspire System Administrator.

Kentucky Commonwealth Virtual Library (KCVL)

Description: The KCVL uses WebZ to provide a common interface to 32 FirstSearch and EBSCO databases and the library catalogs of participating libraries throughout the state of Kentucky.

Description: The Lebanon Valley College uses WebZ to provide a common interface to the college's Bishop Library Sirsi Unicorn catalog, catalogs of selected ACLCP libraries, numerous FirstSearch and EbscoHost databases, and other reference tools.

Description: MnLINK uses WebZ to provide simultaneous searches across 20 different library automation systems in Minnesota, as well as providing access to several databases resident at vendor sites.

Virtual Academic Library Environment of New Jersey (VALE)
Location: State of New Jersey

Description: VALE provides a customized interface to four commercial databases loaded locally on a VALE server and provides remote access to other commercial databases for participating libraries.

Since access to catalogs and databases is controlled by IP authorization, you cannot view VALE's database list screen or search databases. However, you can click the About VALE link on the home page to learn about the VALE project.


University of Chicago Library

The University of Minnesota is a member of two consortia who use SiteSearch, the CIC and the Minnesota Library Information Network (MnLINK). The University of Minnesota Libraries use WebZ to allow patrons to search the CIC Virtual Electronic Library (VEL), which contains the catalogs of all CIC universities, and the Center for Research Libraries. Patrons can also submit ILL requests for resources from any of the CIC libraries with this system. They recently began using WebZ as a Web-based interface to their NOTIS catalog. Their WebZ interface also provides access to the catalogs of selected MnLINK participants.

University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries use WebZ to allow patrons to search the catalogs of the CIC Virtual Electronic Library (VEL), which contains the catalogs of all CIC universities. Patrons can also submit ILL requests for resources from any of the CIC libraries.

Africa Focus: Sights and Sounds of a Continent, is a locally-mounted database that the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries store and maintain with Database Builder. This is a database of digitized images and sound files contributed over the years to the African Studies Program of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A customized WebZ interface allows patrons to retrieve images and sound files of interest from the database by searching descriptive metadata. This database uses three servers for storing its resources: a UNIX server for the database containing the metadata, a Web server for images, and a RealMedia server for the audio files.
