Fall Meeting of SiteSearch Users The fall meeting of SiteSearch Users was held on Sunday, October 20, 2002 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Hilton Hotel in Windsor, Ontario. It was held in conjunction with the Access Conference. The Access
Conference is a small library tech conference which has a good reputation
among those who have attended. Speakers at the conference included Bill
Moen, Clifford Lynch, and Eric Lease Morgan, among many others. Information
about the Access Conference which followed the meeting can be found at
http://www.access.uwindsor.ca/. You did not have to attend the Access conference to attend the SiteSearch Users' meeting! The meeting was scheduled before the conference to help make the most of your travel money. Money for lunch was collected at the door and was the only cost for the SiteSearch meeting. The agenda:

ASIST 2002As part of the panel on open source, Brenda Bailey-Hainer gave a presentation on "SiteSearch OpenSource and the Colorado Virtual Library." This session was organized for the American Society for Information Science & Technology 2002 annual meeting in Philadelphia by the Digital Libraries SIG. The OpenSource session was held on November 19th, 1:30-3:00 pm, see http://www.asis.org/Conferences/AM02/tuesday.html#T130-2. The 2002 ALA Annual Conference took place in Atlanta, Georgia on June 13-19, 2002. Two SiteSearch Open Forums, "Open SiteSearch: An Open Forum on Open Source," were held on Saturday June 15, 2002 at the Georgia World Congress Center B315. Session 2 was a repeat of Session 1 and about 35 people attended the two sessions. These sessions
were an opportunity to learn more about the Open SiteSearch Open Source
Project and how new and current SiteSearch users could participate. Recent
SiteSearch Open Source projects were reviewed and plans for community
development were presented. LITA Preconference
The
LITA Preconference -- Working with Open Source Software: A Hands-On Preconference
took place at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia on June 14, 2002. The
SiteSearch software was one of the Open Source software tools featured
in this LITA Preconference Workshop. This workshop provided hands-on experience
in using and implementing Open Source tools and software as they relate
to libraries. The 2002 ALA Midwinter Conference took place in New Orleans, LA, on January 18-23, 2002. OCLC SiteSearch Open Source Project Forum
OCLC made the SiteSearch toolkit available as an open source project in the first quarter of 2002. As an open source project, SiteSearch source code is available for download at no charge for non-commercial use. Users are able to install the software and run it out-of-the-box or customize it to meet their unique needs. Open SiteSearch 4.2.0 provides a user interface tool for building and maintaining databases with the new OCLC Pears software. OCLC facilitates user interaction and collaborative software development by providing electronic forums and listservs. OCLC also provides server space for the sharing of user contributed fixes, enhancements, and new projects. With full access to the Java source code, library developers and others have the opportunity to improve upon the already robust and stable software built by OCLC. out-of-the-box software was also demonstrated and the Open Source Project
web site was discussed. This forum invited current as well as interested new users to attend and discover how they could participate. The SiteSearch community was encouraged to invite new users and to tell others about the presentation. The 2001 ALA Midwinter Conference took place in Washington, D.C., on January 12-17, 2001. SiteSearch Users' Group Breakfast at 2001 ALA Midwinter This was the seminannual meeting of the Open SiteSearch Users' Group. OCLC staff discussed the features planned for SiteSearch 4.1.2 and SiteSearch 4.2.0.
