2002 Fall Meeting of SiteSearch Users

The fall meeting of SiteSearch Users was held on Sunday, October 20, 2002 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Hilton Hotel in Windsor, Ontario. It was held in conjunction with the Access Conference.

The Access Conference is a small library tech conference which has a good reputation among those who have attended. Speakers at the conference included Bill Moen, Clifford Lynch, and Eric Lease Morgan, among many others. Information about the Access Conference which followed the meeting can be found at http://www.access.uwindsor.ca/.

You did not have to attend the Access conference to attend the SiteSearch Users' meeting! The meeting was scheduled before the conference to help make the most of your travel money. Money for lunch was collected at the door and was the only cost for the SiteSearch meeting.

The agenda:

  • Show and Tell Members present shared their implementations in 10 minutes or less. Allowed members to get to know each other and each other's implementations.

ASIST 2002

As part of the panel on open source, Brenda Bailey-Hainer gave a presentation on "SiteSearch OpenSource and the Colorado Virtual Library." This session was organized for the American Society for Information Science & Technology 2002 annual meeting in Philadelphia by the Digital Libraries SIG.

2002 ALA Annual Conference

The 2002 ALA Annual Conference took place in Atlanta, Georgia on June 13-19, 2002.

Two SiteSearch Open Forums, "Open SiteSearch: An Open Forum on Open Source," were held on Saturday June 15, 2002 at the Georgia World Congress Center B315. Session 2 was a repeat of Session 1 and about 35 people attended the two sessions.

These sessions were an opportunity to learn more about the Open SiteSearch Open Source Project and how new and current SiteSearch users could participate. Recent SiteSearch Open Source projects were reviewed and plans for community development were presented.


LITA Preconference —
Working with Open Source Software: A Hands-On Preconference

The LITA Preconference -- Working with Open Source Software: A Hands-On Preconference took place at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia on June 14, 2002. The SiteSearch software was one of the Open Source software tools featured in this LITA Preconference Workshop. This workshop provided hands-on experience in using and implementing Open Source tools and software as they relate to libraries.


2002 ALA Midwinter Conference

The 2002 ALA Midwinter Conference took place in New Orleans, LA, on January 18-23, 2002.

OCLC SiteSearch Open Source Project Forum

OCLC made the SiteSearch toolkit available as an open source project in the first quarter of 2002. As an open source project, SiteSearch source code is available for download at no charge for non-commercial use. Users are able to install the software and run it out-of-the-box or customize it to meet their unique needs. Open SiteSearch 4.2.0 provides a user interface tool for building and maintaining databases with the new OCLC Pears software.

OCLC facilitates user interaction and collaborative software development by providing electronic forums and listservs. OCLC also provides server space for the sharing of user contributed fixes, enhancements, and new projects. With full access to the Java source code, library developers and others have the opportunity to improve upon the already robust and stable software built by OCLC.

This forum invited current as well as interested new users to attend and discover how they could participate. The SiteSearch community was encouraged to invite new users and to tell others about the presentation.


2001 ALA Midwinter Conference

The 2001 ALA Midwinter Conference took place in Washington, D.C., on January 12-17, 2001.

SiteSearch Users' Group Breakfast at 2001 ALA Midwinter

This was the seminannual meeting of the Open SiteSearch Users' Group. OCLC staff discussed the features planned for SiteSearch 4.1.2 and SiteSearch 4.2.0.

2000 ALA Annual Conference

The 2000 ALA Annual Conference took place from July 6-12, 2000 in Chicago, Illinois. During this conference, Open SiteSearch staff and users held the following SiteSearch-related sessions:

  • SiteSearch Users' Update Breakfast
    Saturday, July 8

    Kara Byerly, Manager of Open SiteSearch User Services, provided highlights of the May 2000 User Meeting, discussed plans for upcoming SiteSearch releases, and requested feedback and enhancement requests from users. Greg Zick from the University of Washington described the University of Washington's CONTENT Multimedia Archival Software and its interoperability with the SiteSearch software.   • How Do You Organize and Implement a Statewide Initiative?
    Monday, July 10

    This session described how the Open SiteSearch software helped three statewide projects become reality and presenters explained how their organizations planned, funded, and implemented these projects.


2000 ALA Midwinter Conference

The 2000 ALA Annual Conference took place from January 14-19, 2000 in San Antonio, Texas. During this conference, Open SiteSearch staff and users held the following SiteSearch-related sessions:

    Saturday, January 15

    Open SiteSearch staff described the results of Y2K testing for the SiteSearch software, the SiteSearch Z39.50 testing initiative, features to be included in the SiteSearch 4.1.1 release, and the upcoming SiteSearch 2000 User Meeting.

  • Library Digitization Projects with Open SiteSearch – The Colorado Digitization Project
    Monday, January 17

    George Malkovec from the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries described the Colorado Digitization Project, which is creating a union catalog of metadata. The Colorado Digitization Project is a collaborative initiative to create a digital library-museum that will provide the people of Colorado access to the rich and cultural resources of the state.


1999 ALA Annual Conference

The 1999 ALA Annual Conference was held on June 25-30, 1999 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The conference provided Open SiteSearch staff with the opportunity to hold the following informational sessions for current SiteSearch users:

  • OCLC SiteSearch User Update Session
    Saturday, June 26th

    Open SiteSearch staff offered a "sneak peek" at the SiteSearch 4.1 software scheduled for release in September 1999 and discussed future plans for the product.

  • OCLC SiteSearch Breakfast Workshop - Web Standards for Describing Data
    Sunday, June 27th and Monday, June 28th

    Eric Miller, OCLC Office of Research, co-chair of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Resource Description Framework (RDF) Model and Syntax Working Group, and member of the W3C Metadata Coordination Committee, and Pat Stevens, OCLC Distributed Systems Marketing Manager, discussed the benefits of the Extensible Markup Language (XML). Attendees learned how this standard allows SiteSearch 4.1 to manipulate data through a Web-based interface.

    From ILL/Document Delivery to Electronic Books and Journals
    How Do We Get There from Here
    Saturday, June 26th

    Pat Stevens presented how Open SiteSearch WebZ integrates holdings information throughout the information delivery process.
